What, exactly? Engineering new materials is a huge field of activity because today’s (and even more tomorrow’s) applications are more demanding and sometimes dangerous than yesterday’s. The challenge is to manufacture materials that are lighter than metals but also resistant to corrosion, radiation and/or extreme heat. A lighter spacecraft means a larger payload or a cheaper flight. Lighter transport means are also cheaper and less polluting, too. Resistant materials mean safer factories and less maintenance, etc.
